BOOSTED DUAL+ ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD REVIEW
The Boosted Dual+ is widely hailed as the best money can buy right now. But it takes a lot of money to get it. We paid $1,499 for ours.
At first inspection — the Boosted Dual+ looks like a simple packaging of OPS (other people’s stuff) — Vanguard bamboo deck — Orangatang 75mm wheels — Caliber trucks. The innovation and beauty of this board –though — lies in the seamless integration of it’s power plant.
The company claims the brushless DC-motors — one on each back wheel — generate 2000 watts of power. I don’t know what this means — but it sounds like a lot — we wanted to find out.
If a longboard is supposed to cruise like a Cadillac — this Boosted Dual+ feels more like a Porsche 911. There are 4 speed settings — Quinn settled into Level 4 right away — easily hitting the 22 mph claimed by the company. It’s fast jumpy and torquey — the board is happy to leave you behind if you’re not ready. It goes forward or backwards — and braking is stout and smooth.
The The Boosted Dual+ weighed in at 14.8 pounds — just as advertised. This might not sound like much — but it is — trust me — you don’t want to carry this board for more than a block or two — unless you’ve got it strapped on some kind of custom backpack.
You can get over the weight, though. The real problem with the Boosted Dual+ is its range. The company claims you can get 7 miles in eco mode. I’m not sure what eco mode is — I assume it’s power level 1 — which you’ll never use after you get used to the board. Quinn — a 90 pounder — got 5.9 miles riding at level 4 — mostly full throttle — on mostly level streets. I’m 190 lbs — and I got 5.1 miles. This distance might sound acceptable — but it’s less than you’d think.
The Stanford campus is pretty close to our house — about 4 miles — and I’d love to ride this board to football games. The board will get me there — but it won’t get me home — and riding the heavy board without power is anti-fun — like pushing a car that’s run out of gas — you don’t want to do it.
Darn is this board fun to ride. But damn that battery life and range.
