The Evolve Bamboo 2 in 1 arrived yesterday — one day early — good job Evolve! — (Marbel take notice). Unboxing the Evolve is an experience — in-person the board looks like something out of Mad Max. There’s nothing evolutionary about this board — it looks feels rides revolutionary.
The Evolve looks humongous — and it is. The specs say the deck measures 38″ — just like the Boosted and the E-GO — and this may be true — but the extra length created by the wheels and rear-mounted motor make this board look and feel significantly larger in person. It weighs 22 lbs with the all-terrain setup (pictured) — compared to ~15 lbs for both the Booosted and the E-GO. If the latter two push the envelope of acceptable commuter weight — the Evolve borders on impractical. But it rides way lighter than it tips the scales.
The board accelerates to 22 mph with the all-terrain wheels — but it doesn’t feel particularly comfortable at that velocity — a safe speed felt more like 15-20 mph. The first thing you notice about the Evolve is how it turns and carves — it feels so natural and beautiful. It was by far the easiest electric skateboard for Quinn to handle — despite its weight.
The all-terrain wheels are amazing on both uneven and smooth pavement and they run well on grass. But don’t try them on gravel or sand — they’ll just spin. This is a limitation of the single motor — powering just one wheel — more than the wheels themselves.
The Evolve braking takes practice — it is very grabby — easy to get thrown. This is not a negative per se — just something to know and get used to — especially when alternating between boards.
Quinn took the Evolve to his Mom’s house for 4th of July weekend — so the full report is on its way soon…
1. Most fun to ride
3. Grabby/jerky brakes
